Students study the Portuguese route to Santiago (Sant Iago) de Compostela and the cultural history of the Camino and then walk the 144-mile (232-kilometer) route from Porto to Santiago, to the shrine of St. James the Greater, apostle of Christ.
The first week is spent on campus studying the cultural history of the route and the Portuguese language. Students choose one of the twelve stages of the route and the destination city or town to describe on a class digital map. The pilgrimage is divided into twelve stages, averaging a demanding 12 miles per day.
The trip also includes three nights in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, three nights in Porto, a rest day in Valença, on the border between Portugal and Galicia, and two nights at the final destination of Santiago de Compostela.
